Professional Summary
Professor Barnes has two primary areas of research interest. First, his research seeks to identify how genetic and environmental factors combine to impact criminological phenomena. Second, he studies the offender decision-making process in order to gain insight into the way in which offenders choose their targets. To that end, he has published in a wide range of outlets including Criminology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Lancet, Nature Genetics, Psychological Bulletin, and Psychological Science.
Dr. Barnes serves in several leadership roles, including Director of the School of Criminal Justice, Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Criminal Justice, and head of the Criminology Team for the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study.
He is considered among the most influential scholars in the discipline (Journal of Criminal Justice Education) and in 2021 he was awarded the highest honor from the Southern Criminal Justice Association, the Educator of the Year Award.
