Professional Summary

Christopher Bendle is a PhD candidate in Ancient History. His main areas of interest are the later Roman Empire, especially the military and political spheres, as well as the intersection of identity, religion, and social networks with power. He has been increasingly interested in the post-imperial era, especailly the successor kingdoms' continuities with Rome and their relationships with the surviving Byzantine Empire.

He graduated from the University of Melbourne with First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 2015, with a double major in History and Ancient World Studies. He received a Master of Arts in Ancient History from the same institute in 2020. Christopher also completed a Post-Baccalaureate in Latin and Ancient Greek at the University of Pennsylvania in 2024.

Christopher recently published his first monograph, "The Office of Magister Militum in the 4th Century CE: a Study into the Impact of Political and Military Leadership on the Later Roman Empire", a book which explores the changing nature of the highest-ranking military generals of the Roman military and how this impacted the power dynamic of the later Empire. He also has experience excavating at Tell es-Safi/Gath, Israel, and has presented at the Amphorae XIII Conference. Christopher also volunteered as an editor for the Amphora journal.

Between and during his studies, Christopher has worked as a national-level swim coach in Australia, and a Social Studies teacher at St. Edmond's Academy in Delaware, and as a Latin Teacher at Boys' Latin High School in west Philadelphia.
