Professional Summary

My research focuses on the cultural legacies of French imperialism, migration in contemporary France, and queer practices of memory in Francophone and transnational contexts. Drawing on affect theory, postcolonial and queer studies, my work examines how cultural forms—including literature, film, and popular media—produce and contest narratives of belonging. My research also engages in broad comparative dialogue with Arabic studies, gender, and sexuality studies. I have published articles in journals such as Contemporary French CivilizationFrench StudiesÉtudes FrancophonesIntertexts, and Expressions Maghrébines, addressing questions of migration, gender, affect, and cultural representation. My publications include several edited volumes, including Diversity and Decolonization in French Studies (Palgrave), Taking Up Space: Women at Work in Contemporary France (WUP), Abdellah Taïa’s Queer Migrations (Lexington), and Queer Realms of Memory (LUP). My current book project extend this work by examining Moroccan cultural production and the affective circulation of global visibility.

My scholarship also extends to pedagogy, including critical analyses of language textbooks and the representations of learners and target cultures they construct, as well as affective approaches to language learning that foreground questions of power, identity, and inclusion. I regularly teach undergraduate and graduate courses on the Maghreb and contemporary France (Plural Maghreb, Franco-Arabic Literature & Film, Queer Arab Cinema, Contesting the National Narrative) that examine colonial and postcolonial histories, cultural production, and questions of race, gender, and sexuality across literature, cinema, and media. These courses emphasize transnational perspectives to Francophone and Arabic cultural contexts.

In addition to my publications, I am actively engaged in editorial work in the field. I serve as editor-in-chief of Passages Francophones, a journal for undergraduate research, and as associate editor of CFC Intersections. I have also held editorial roles with Contemporary French Civilization and book series with Liverpool University Press. I am also deeply engaged in service to the profession. I am a co-founder of the Diversity, Decolonization, and the French Curriculum (DDFC) scholarly collective, through which I have organized international conferences and contributed to ongoing conversations about equity, decolonial pedagogy, and structural change in French and Francophone studies. In addition, I have served in leadership and elected roles in professional organizations, including the Modern Language Association and Women in French.
