Research and Practice Interests

Julia S. Carlson is the author of Romantic Marks and Measures: Wordsworth’s Poetry in Fields of Print (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016), winner of the British Association for Romantic Studies First Book Prize 2017. She is the co-editor of Romantic Cartographies: Mapping, Literature, Culture, 1789-1832 (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and a special issue of Essays in Romanticism entitled Romanticizing Historical Poetics: Voice, Lyric, Rhythm, Address (2018). With the Multigraph Collective, she co-authored Interacting with Print: Elements of Reading in the Era of Print Saturation (University of Chicago Press, 2018). Since 2018, she has been an editor of the open-access, online journal Romanticism on the Net (RoN), which publishes work, in traditional and innovative formats, devoted to British literature and culture of the “Romantic Century” (1750-1850).

A specialist in British Romanticism (1750-1850), she teaches a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in literature, cultural studies, and film. Recent undergraduate courses include “Romanticism and the Invention of Nature,” “Frankenstein at 200,” “The Environment in Literature and Film,” “Word, Image, Song,” “Episodes in Modern Consciousness,” and “Romantic Autobiography.” Recent graduate seminars include “Poetry and Mediality,” “Theoretical Approaches to Poetry,” “The Prelude and Don Juan,” and “Romanticism in Script, in Print, Engraved.”

Her research interests include the cartographic, prosodic, and diagrammatic contexts of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century poetry; book history, manuscript culture, and media studies; blindness and literacy; and historic approaches to meter and form. She is currently writing a second monograph on inscriptional practices, transcriptional technologies, and “digital interactivity.” Recent articles explore the invention of printing and mapping for the blind; the poetics of touch; the writing of Dorothy and Mary Wordsworth; and visualizations of historic and metrical time.
