Professional Summary
Vasileios Dimoglidis (he/him/his) is a Ph.D. Candidate in Classical Philology. He received his B.A. (2016) and M.A. (2019) in Classics from the University of Ioannina in Greece. He is specializing in Greek & Roman Theater and Hellenistic Poetry. In his M.A. Thesis (under the supervision of Helen Gasti) Vasileios examined various aspects of metapoetry in Euripides’ Ion. In his Ph.D. Dissertation (under the supervision of Susan Prince) he focuses on the construction of emotions in Theocritus' Idylls and the manipulation of his reader's responses. Besides his Dissertation, Vasileios is also working on a monograph project that examines the symbolic values of the term caput in Seneca’s tragedies (SCS 2023, ICS (49) 2024), where he suggests that Seneca turns caput into a more complex signifier than a mere term for the ‘head’. Caput is used as a metaphor for body and identity. As such, it serves as a pejorative form of (self-)address, a marker denoting downgraded status, and as Seneca’s commentary on theatrical roles; it also turns into a symbol of the political ruler, while decapitation represents defeat and loss of political identity and power. Seneca deploys caput as the body part that indicates shifting structures of identity (familial, theatrical, political) embedded in, capturing, and commenting upon a ‘tragic’ world of domestic violence, role anxieties, and of civic unrest.
