Research Summary:

Fan laboratory is dedicated to performing cardiovascular research that involves:  1) dissecting the molecular/cellular mechanisms underlying ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiac remodeling; 2) elucidating how infection/inflammation (i.e., sepsis) causes vascular leakage and heart failure; and 3) defining the role of macrophages in disease-induced cardiovascular dysfunction. Fan lab primarily uses in vivo transgenic and knockout animal models as well as in vitro primary cell culture.  In addition, multiple state-of-art techniques (i.e., CRISPR-Cas9, single-cell sequencing, RNA sequencing, cell sorting, flow cytometry, Co-IP, Co-immunostaining, and bioinformatics) are employed to analyze the molecular/cellular mechanisms. 

Notably, his research team was the first to show that miRNAs were involved in the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced cardiovascular damage (Circulation, 2009 & 2010; J Biol Chem., 2016 & 2019).  Recent years, Dr. Fan's lab has been focusing on a new research direction toward understanding the roles of exosomes/extracellular vesicles and macrophages in cardiovascular patho-physiology (Mol. Ther. 2021; Cardiovasc. Res. 2021, 2023; JCI Insigh, 2024).  Because of his outstanding achievement in the field of exosome/miRNA research, Dr. Fan was awarded “Established Investigator” by American Heart Association in 2016. Currently, Dr. Fan serves as editorial board member for multiple academic journals (i.e., Shock, Cells, Front. Immunol.), and grant proposal reviewer for NIH and AHA.
