Professional Summary
Dr. Ann Gakumo has over 20 years of experience as a registered nurse, including nearly 15 years in academia. Her clinical background is in critical care and her program of research focuses on eliminating racial disparities and inequities among African Americans living with HIV. Her research has been funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Merck, Genentech, and the Macy Foundation among others. She has been an invited expert on national programs funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, Black AIDS Institute, and Health Resources and Services Administration. In this capacity, she provided her expertise on linking patient-centered outcomes to medical and staff workforce education. Her work has been cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a highly important topic in the health literacy and HIV research arena.
Dr. Gakumo is an Associate Professor and the Endowed Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. In this role, she leads the college’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and guided the development of a strategic plan to advance this mission through teaching, research, and service activities. During her academic career, she has provided her expertise and experience in increasing nursing workforce diversity, improving college admissions processes, and establishing best practices for diversifying curricula and promoting more inclusive teaching practices.

Dr. Gakumo's program of research focuses on eliminating racial disparities and inequities among African Americans living with HIV. In addition, she leads the College's diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and guided the development of a strategic plan to advance this mission through teaching, research, and service activities.
