Professional Summary

Ken Greis earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Kentucky working with Prof. Sam Turco to understand the structure/function relationship of glycoconjugate survival factors produced by protozoan parasites.  He subsequently did postdoctoral research to evaluate the role of glycosylation on tegument proteins in human cytomegalovirus infections at Johns Hopkins under the mentorship of Professors Gerald Hart and Wade Gibson.  During a second postdoctoral stint with Prof. Hart at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Greis began to transition his research interest into the newly emerging field of protein mass spectrometry in collaboration with Prof. Steve Barnes.   For the past 30 years, his research has focused on technology development and the application of mass spectrometry to understand biochemical and biomedical systems.  From 1996-2006, he built and lead protein characterization, mass spectrometry and proteomics groups at two pharmaceutical companies-Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research (now part of Pfizer) and Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals.  He has developed significant expertise in mass spectrometry technology development and project management while collaborating in a variety of research areas including: signal transduction, angiogenesis, metabolic regulation (obesity and diabetes), anti-microbial, musculoskeletal, inflammation, cardiovascular and cancer.  In July 2006, Dr. Greis joined the University of Cincinnati faculty where he is now a Professor of Cancer Biology and the Director of Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry for the University and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  He also served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Cancer and Cell Biology from 2012-2017 and then added administrative roles as Associate Dean for Research Core Facilities in the UC College of Medicine in 2017 and as the Executive Director of Research Infrastructure and Facilities in the Office for the UC Vice President for Research in 2019 and as Associate Director for Shared Resources in the UC Cancer Center in 2020.  His independent research is focused on global PTM profiling by both label-free and isotope tagging quantitative mass spectrometry to understand aberrant signaling mechanisms as new therapeutic targets for disease.
