Professional Summary
The Herr laboratory studies protein-protein interactions involved in bacterial pathogenesis, immune regulation, and thrombosis. We use the complementary techniques of biophysical chemistry and X-ray crystallography to understand how cell-surface proteins recognize their ligands and mediate their biological function. We have three major areas of investigation: bacterial surface proteins that mediate intercellular adhesion in biofilms; immune system proteins, including IgA1-receptor interactions implicated in the disease IgA nephropathy; and receptor-collagen interactions leading to platelet activation. In addition to our major projects, my group works with many other laboratories at our institution and across the country using analytical ultracentrifugation, surface plasmon resonance, circular dichroism, binding analyses, and molecular modeling.
Education
Bachelor's Degree: Oral Roberts University Tulsa, OK, 1993 (Biomedical Chemistry)
Doctoral Degree: Washington University St. Louis, MO, 1999 (Molecular Biophysics)
Fellowship: California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA, 2003 (Research)
Research and Practice Interests
My lab studies protein-protein interactions involved in receptor signaling and bacterial pathogenesis. We use x-ray crystallography to solve the three-dimensional atomic structures of interesting proteins, combined with techniques of biophysical chemistry to understand their interactions in solution. In particular, we use analytical ultracentrifugation, calorimetry, and surface plasmon resonance to study binding and complex formation.
