Sheena Horning, Ph.D. is a licensed Psychologist in the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine, specializing in Medical Psychology and Neuropsychology. She holds a particular interest in treating patients with comorbid mental health disorders and physical conditions, particularly those with neurological illness and injury. She has also had specialized training in working with older adults and caregivers of patients suffering from dementia. Dr. Horning applies psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of various mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and has been trained in the modalities of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Caregiver Family Therapy, and Cognitive Remediation. She also conducts neuropsychological evaluations for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological, medical, and psychiatric conditions.
In addition to clinical care, Dr. Horning has been involved in various research investigations within the field of aging, in particular investigating the neurocognitive and emotional changes that occur due to normal and pathological aging processes. In 2014, she received the Makinodan Research Award at the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center for her work exploring insight in Alzheimer’s disease and its relation to psychiatric and behavioral disturbances, which was recently published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr. Horning has also published several research articles on understanding and treating elder abuse.
Dr. Horning earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. She completed a clinical internship and a 2-year advanced fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology and Geropsychology at the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare System. She also trained at the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and International Neuropsychological Society.
