Professional Summary

My research focuses on the history of Indigenous Nations and colonial powers in the North Pacific. My dissertation examined Tlingits in southeast Alaska and their use of trade and diplomacy with Russian and American colonizers to preserve their sovereignty in the nineteenth century. I am especially interested in the role of the environment in shaping colonial encounters.

I teach the history of Vast Early America and stress the global connections to the North American continent. I use custom-made historical simulations to engage students on a variety of subjects (from Indigenous-Colonial politics in the 1700s to the making of the New Deal in the 1930s).

As a teacher and researcher, my goal is to make history accessible (and interesting!) to the public.
