Professional Summary
Dr. Pitman received a Ph.D. in Social, Psychological and Philosophical Foundations of Education at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1983. She is an educational anthropologist who has conducted research on urban high schools, home schooling, qualitative evaluation, and culture acquisition theory. She has co-authored several books including Caring as Tenacity: Stories of Urban School Survival, Home Schooling: Political, Historical and Pedagogical Perspective, Culture Acquisition: A Holistic Approach to Human Learning and Educational Evaluation: Ethnography in Theory, Practice and Politics. She also has produced book chapters and articles including those she published as editor of a special edition of Anthropology & Education Quarterly. She has presented at numerous conference including annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association, American Educational Studies Association, American Educational Research Association, and Society for Applied Anthropology. Dr. Pitman teaches courses on Cultural Differences, Women, Culture and Education, Anthropology and Education, and the three-course sequence on qualitative research.
