MaryAnn Salonoy Powers

Soprano and vocal pedagogue, MaryAnn Powers, is a performer of diverse classical repertoire spanning from Early Music ensembles all the way to New Music premieres. In 2022 MaryAnn returned to the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory and Continued Education Department (CCM Prep) after some time in San Antonio, Texas; there she taught remotely and performed part time. Previously, she resided in Cincinnati, Ohio where she focused her career on teaching, coaching, and being the area coordinator of the voice faculty at CCM Prep. She also enjoyed organizing and performing in chamber recitals, solo recitals, along with being a freelance soloist at venues including Cincinnati’s Memorial Hall, CCM, and Capital University. Most recent performance work include being a soloist for The Messiah with the San Antonio Mastersingers, and Benjamin Britton’s realization of Henry Purcell’s If Music Be the Food of Love, 3rd version while in San Antonio. Recent chamber works include Shepherd on the Rock by Schubert, selected Brahms duets, and Let’s Imitate Her Notes Above from Alexander’s Feast.

A dedicated voice teacher since 2005, MaryAnn has guided advanced students through the application/audition process to continue their education in voice or theatre at institutions such as The Juilliard School, CCM, Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory, The Frost School of Music at UM, to name a few.  Her students have won college scholarships, participated in national summer programs including CCM Voice Workshop and The Schmidt Vocal Institute,  sung with the May Festival Youth Choir, the May Festival Choir, Cincinnati Choral Society, Cincinnati Children’s Choir, All State Choir in Kentucky, and performed in numerous community theater productions.  She has been a guest performer and/or master clinician at Capitol University in Columbus, Ohio, the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservator of Music Preparatory Department, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Roane State Community College in Tennessee.  

Previously, Ms Powers resided in New England, where she premiered works by Matthew McConnell, Derek Jacoby, and Stanly Hoffman at the Lily Pad, New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall and the Boston Center for the Arts. She also sang with Schola Nocturna, which is a group that specializes in Early Music. Operatic repertoire includes Lucy from The Telephone, La Musica from L'Orfeo, Josephine from Story of an Hour (premiere).

MaryAnn’s love of language and diction has led her to study abroad at Universität Leipzig, the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, Germany, and to Scuola Italia in Urbania, Italy. Her most influential vocal training has been under Constance Rock, William Cotten, Patricia Pease, and Christina von Wartenberg.  Ms. Powers holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and second Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA; a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Ohio University in Athens, OH; and Doctorate of Musical Arts course work from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT.
