Professional Summary
Dr. Claudia B. Rebola is Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, Director of the Center for DAAP Research and Innovation, and Professor of Industrial Design at the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Dr. Rebola was also an Associate Professor in the Industrial Design Department at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Programs in the School of Industrial Design and head of the D-Matters Studio Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Rebola’s work brings together design, art, science, and technology to experiment, design, and prototype innovative interactive products in the realm of health. Her specific interests are in collaborative, transdisciplinary research and design methods in areas related to design for vulnerable populations—aging, addiction, and disability in areas related to universal design, social innovation, social connectedness, tangible embedded interactions, and robotics. Her ultimate goals are on humanizing technology, empowering users, engaging communities, and celebrating the value of simplicity and tangibility in user-product interactions by design.
Her work has been funded by NSF, NIH, Dolby Labs, NIDDLR, to mention a few. She was co-PI for the NSF Partnerships for Innovation grant "Next Generation Robotic Intelligence that Provides Psycho-Social Support for Older Adults" in collaboration with Brown University. She was also Director of the T3 component of the RERC TechSAge Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technologies to Support Successful Aging with Disability at the Georgia Institute of Technology, funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). At Georgia Tech, she was also the co-founder of the Design and Technologies for Healthy Aging (DATHA) housed at the Center for Assistive Technologies and Environmental Access (CATEA). She works closely with the IDSA organization and has participated as a committee member in several ACM conferences and Gerontological Societies such the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).
She publishes regularly in design, science and technology, human-computer interaction, robotics, public health, and medicine journals, and diverse conferences. She has published Sincluding her book “Designed Technologies for Healthy Aging” by Morgan and Claypool. She also serves as a reviewer to prestigious journals such as the International Journal of Design and SAGE Open, panel reviewer in funding agencies such as national Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as a Full Board member in the Institutional Review Board at UC.
As a native of Argentina, she received her undergraduate degree on Industrial Design (1998) from the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba. She also holds an M.S. in Industrial Design (2001) and a Ph.D. on Information Design (2005) from North Carolina State University. Dr. Rebola has been a recipient of numerous honors and awards, among them the Fulbright-Hays Grant, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Sigma Delta, and an Argentinean presidential recognition for outstanding academic achievements in the design discipline.
