Personal Statement
Notably, a phenomenal cirrhosis chalk talk given by my senior medicine resident led me to consider engaging in clinical medical education. I tutored preclinical classes and enjoyed the near-peer dynamics of the sessions. This became a useful foundation for stepping into a mentoring and educational role as a fourth-year medical student. During my first acting internship, I embraced the opportunity to walk through different medical problems with the third-year student, such as determining the etiology of a patient's acidosis, calculating Light's criteria for a pleural effusion, and describing the logistics of a rapid response in real-time. I realized that understanding the complexities of medicine and explaining them in an engaging and memorable way to medical learners, patients, and patient families is exactly what I want to do and excel at throughout my career.

I had the privilege to work with UC IM team early on as a medical student through QI initiatives – the collaborative environment, collective aim to continuously improve, and emphasis on a joyful learning experience were aspects of the program that became key factors in my decision to pursue Internal Medicine. Later on, as a clinical learner who was developing my interest in clinical medical education, I especially appreciated UC IM’s dedication to growth mindset and education innovation. I’m so thrilled to have the chance to train with a program that offers such wonderful opportunities and aligns with my own values!
