Professional Summary

Feeling lonely, excluded, and “dis-placed” is increasingly familiar to the contemporary human experience in the United States. D.J.’s present work experiments with communication design’s capacity to connect, include, and “place” people in their surrounding ecologies.

D.J. started teaching part-time at the University of Cincinnati’s Ullman School of Design in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning in 2017. He became a full-time Assistant Professor in 2022 after finishing his Master of Design at the University of Cincinnati. He primarily teaches typography, design research methods, and an introduction to design lecture.

Before academia, D.J. ran an independent practice that continues under the name  Trischler Design Co. His portfolio includes civic-centered projects like the official typeface for Chattanooga, Tennessee, the visual identity design for the Chattanooga Public Library, and flag designs for several neighborhoods in Cincinnati. His work is featured in The Atlantic,  Nieman Labs, and the textbook “Designing Brand Identities.”

D.J. earned a Bachelor of Science in graphic and communication design from  La Roche University and a Master of Design from the University of  Cincinnati, where he received the Outstanding Graduating Student Award from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning.

He and his wife, Megan, live in the East Price Hill neighborhood. In 2022, they received the Price Hill Will Top of the Hill Award for Dedicated Residents. They design and distribute a monthly neighborhood newsletter called The Claypole Commons to the 25 households on their block about the evolving ecology on their street.
