Professional Summary
Pearl Tsang obtained a BA from Barnard College, followed by a PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. After her postdoctoral positions in biological NMR, Dr. Tsang joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry at UC. Professor Tsang is one of the several biochemists in this Department and as such her general research interests entail elucidation of structure-function relationships of proteins, nucleic acids and biomolecular complexes. One particular class of proteins studied in the Tsang lab corresponds to the aminoacyl tRNA (transfer RNA) synthetaseses. These are enzymes which are crucial for correct covalent linkage of a given amino acid to its corresponding tRNA molecule; this process is also known as 'charging' of the tRNA and is essential for accurate protein translation. These investigations are conducted in order to enhance our understanding of how these proteins carry out their function since their structural and dynamic properties are relevant to their functions. The research conducted in this lab typically involves the production, purification and characterization of the proteins and peptides studied and this involves use of molecular biology and protein purification techniques. The characterization of these molecules involves biophysical and spectroscopic (primarily solution NMR) techniques.

Undergraduate Biochemistry Equipment
During Spring, 2016, I was able to procure (from a UC medical school) several pieces of used but functional equipment ($4500. estimated value) to update and improve the range of equipment available for the Chemistry 3045L and 3046L biochemistry laboratory courses. Equipment acquired include a gel imager (with PC), spectrophotometer, Bio-Rad Econopump chromatography system, a temperature-controlled incubator, room temperature agitator, several gel electrophoresis power supplies, Hoefer vertical gel system, six agarose gel boxes and a microcentrifuge. in addition, we also obtained a range of consumable supplies for these lab courses such as pipet tips, kim wipes, eppendorf tubes, parafilm and miscellaneous chemicals.,
August, 2016 OEPT Workshop
In August, I co-organized the 2016 OEPT workshop with Peng Zhang. Balu Addepalli was a third faculty member who volunteered to help Peng and I out during this week-long event. As a result of this workshop, all of the international first year students were able to serve as teaching assistants immediately. Most of them passed their OEPT exam and only a few passed conditionally.,
Served as Poster Judge at 2017 Graduate Student Expo on 2/10/17.,
I obtained approximately $1500. in supplies and small equipment for the Biochemistry Lab courses from a lab in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Spring, 2017. The items included gel electrophoresis apparatus boxes, gel power supplies, pipettors, pipet tips, microcentrifuge, vortexers. These will benefit the students taking the Chemistry 3045L and 3046L courses, as well as the introduction to biochemistry lab courses 2030L and 2031L.,
I organized and supervised the OEPT training for a dozen incoming first year international graduate students in August, 2017. This involved recruiting existing graduate students to help with orientation and practice required to help the incoming students prepare and take their OEPT exam at the beginning of the Fall, 2017 seminar. As a result of this weeklong workshop, all of the OEPT participants passed their OEPT examinations and were cleared to teach right away. ,
In June, 2017, I served as a biochemistry textbook reviewer for Oxford University Press. ,

Reviewer of Biochemistry textbook for Pearson Publishing,
I organized and supervised the OEPT training for all of the Chemistry department's incoming first year, international graduate students in August, 2019. This was done with the help of several previous graduate student volunteers. As a result of this weeklong workshop, all of the OEPT participants passed their OEPT examinations and were cleared to teach right away. ,
I organized and supervised the OEPT training for the Chemistry department's incoming first year, international graduate students starting in December, 2020 with the help of CGSA members. All the workshop participants passed their OEPT exam and were not required to take any additional English as a second language courses. Hence they were able to start their TA duties without delays. ,
Major equipment repair effort was initiated in the summer of 2020 in order to resurrect one of the NMR spectrometers residing in the Chemistry department NMR facility. This instrument was considered to be non-functional and had therefore been left idle for more than 5 years. Its condition was unknown and there were no records regarding which of its components were faulty. In the summer, we began the process of trouble-shooting this instrument, with the help of several departmental staff, especially the newly hired NMR facility manager, Alex Greenwood. Bit by bit, the main components of this instrument were tested, fixed, parts replaced to get it to a point where the computer would communicate with the instrument again. Funds were raised from the department and personal donations in order to cover the cost of components and consultations required for its repair. By the end of the fall semester, most of the components were made functional again. ,
I served as a poster judge at the 2021 UnderGraduate Showcase Poster session. ,
